TikTok will not implement end-to-end encryption for direct messages on its platform.
The company stated this decision aims to enhance user safety and distinguish its service from competitors by allowing law enforcement and safety teams access to messages when required.
According to a BBC report, TikTok believes end-to-end encryption would impede necessary access to messages by authorities.
TikTok told the BBC that this measure is a deliberate choice to protect users, especially younger individuals, from potential harm.
Direct messages on TikTok remain protected with standard encryption, similar to services such as Gmail.
The company indicated that only authorized employees can access direct messages under specific circumstances, including valid law enforcement requests or user reports of harmful conduct.
Popular applications like Signal, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger for 1:1 chats, Apple’s Messages, and Google Messages utilize end-to-end encryption by default.
