Spotify is rolling out a new feature for Premium subscribers designed to improve playlist flow. The Smart Reorder tool rearranges tracks based on musical key and BPM, or beats per minute. This development builds on the customized transitions the service launched in August of last year, which were created to remove awkward silences between songs. Users can now automate playlist sequencing for more seamless listening experiences. The feature is currently available to paying members, allowing them to modify playlist structure with a single tap.
Spotify first introduced customized transitions in August of the previous year. These tools allowed users to create uninterrupted progressions between tracks, effectively eliminating awkward silences. The company reports that users have streamed over 220 hours of mixed playlists since that initial launch. This indicates a significant level of engagement with features designed to smooth out the listening experience. The new Smart Reorder capability represents a further step in automated playlist curation.
To use the Smart Reorder feature, users follow a specific sequence of actions within the app. First, they must tap the “Mix” button located on a playlist. Next, they select the “Edit” option. Within the edit menu, users scroll down to locate the “Smart Reorder” tool. Selecting this option automatically rearranges the playlist based on the identified keys and BPM. The user must then click “Save” to apply the new order to their playlist.
Spotify also highlighted specific song pairings that have become popular among listeners. The most popular transitions include The Weeknd’s “Wake Me Up” into “After Hours.” Another highly streamed transition is Flo Rida’s “Low” into Rihanna’s “S&M.” These examples demonstrate how users are currently utilizing the platform’s mixing capabilities to create specific listening journeys.
