Pixel’s tap-to-wake just stopped working

Following the Android 16 update, some Google Pixel users have reported lock screen problems. Issues include tap-to-wake malfunctions, delayed screen activation via the power button, inconsistent brightness levels, and fingerprint scanner failures. Google is reportedly developing a solution.

The initial Android 16 update for Google Pixel phones introduced features such as Advanced Protection Mode and anti-scammer measures during phone calls. Post-update, users have taken to the Pixel Phone Help forum and Reddit to report lock screen issues.

Reported problems encompass tap-to-wake ceasing to function, delayed or absent screen activation after pressing the power button, significant brightness fluctuations, and fingerprint scanner malfunctions. In some instances, users also describe slow UI responsiveness and application crashes after unlocking their devices.

Though temporary, restarting the phone has proven to be an effective solution for some users. However, the lock screen issues tend to reoccur within a few hours.

A Google product expert suggested resetting adaptive brightness to address the brightness-related issues. This can be done by navigating to Settings > Apps > All apps > Device Health Services > Storage and cache > Clear storage > Reset adaptive brightness.

These lock screen issues have persisted for nearly a month. Google has acknowledged the problem and is currently working on a fix, according to a product expert on Google’s forum. Release details are not yet available.
