Facebook is getting a major AI makeover to win back younger users

Facebook is getting a major AI makeover to win back younger users

Facebook has introduced new AI-powered features for its platform. These updates are intended to offer users more options for self-expression.

The new features include animated profile pictures, photo-restyling tools for Stories and Memories, and animated backgrounds for text posts.

The animated profile picture feature adds motion effects to static photos. These effects can make the subject appear to wave, form a heart shape, or wear a virtual party hat. Optimal results are achieved with clear photos of a single person facing the camera. Users can select photos from their device’s camera roll or from existing platform images. Additional animation options are planned for release later this year.

Facebook has also enhanced Stories and Memories with a tool called “Restyle,” which uses Meta AI to alter the appearance of user-uploaded images. Stories are short photo and video posts that expire after 24 hours, while Memories resurface past content from the same date.

Upon uploading a photo to Stories or selecting a Memory to share, users can access Restyle. Options include entering a text-based prompt or choosing from preset themes like anime, illustrated, glowy, or ethereal. Users can also adjust moods, lighting, and colors, and apply new backdrops such as a beach or a cityscape.

Animated backgrounds are being progressively implemented for text posts. A new rainbow “A” icon allows users to select from various still and animated scenes, including falling leaves or rolling ocean waves. Seasonal backgrounds are also anticipated.

Facebook currently has approximately 2.1 billion daily active users. The platform has previously faced challenges in attracting and retaining younger demographics.

In response, Facebook has integrated new technologies, including AI, and implemented a redesign aimed at a younger audience. Other recent updates include a friends-only feed and the ability to use unique display names in Groups, similar to Reddit’s username system. The platform is also attempting to revitalize its ‘poke’ feature by adding a dedicated button on user profiles; recipients are notified of a poke through notifications.
