Bluesky reveals 2026 roadmap prioritizing Discover feed

Bluesky revealed its 2026 roadmap, which prioritizes enhancements to the algorithmic Discover feed, better follow recommendations, a more real-time experience, and improvements to core features. The company addressed gaps in basic functionalities amid a user growth slowdown.

Bluesky launched publicly in early 2024 following an invite-only phase. Data from the Bluesky API for developers shows the platform reached over 42 million users by early 2024. It distinguishes itself from competitors like X and Threads through custom feeds and configurable algorithms that allow users to tailor their experiences.

Despite these differentiators, Bluesky trails rivals in essential features. These include private accounts for controlled visibility, drafts to save unfinished posts, support for videos exceeding three minutes, and the option to post more than four photos simultaneously. Alex Benzer, Bluesky’s head of product, addressed these shortcomings in a post on the company’s website.

Benzer stated that “the basics need to be solid” before users commit long-term to the platform. His comments followed data indicating a decline in engagement. Similarweb reported a 40 percent year-over-year drop in daily active users as of October 2025, according to Forbes.

Benzer detailed specific upgrades to strengthen the fundamentals. He called for a refined composer that processes media more efficiently. Video uploads require faster speeds, and the current three-minute limit on videos falls short of user needs. The platform must enable posting beyond four photos per update. Thread creation also demands simplification to streamline composing connected posts.

Looking to 2026, Bluesky plans to advance its algorithmic Discover feed for more relevant content discovery. Follow recommendations will improve to connect users with aligned accounts. The app will incorporate a stronger real-time feel through quicker updates and interactions. Additional feature upgrades form part of this forward-looking agenda.
