Anthropic offers free Claude Max access to open source developers

DATE POSTED:March 30, 2026
Anthropic offers free Claude Max access to open source developers

Anthropic has launched the “Claude for Open Source” program, offering six months of free access to its Claude Max 20x subscription for qualified open-source software (OSS) maintainers and contributors. The program aims to support developers who maintain libraries and tools essential to the broader software ecosystem, many of whom often lack recognition and access to advanced AI tools.

The initiative provides a significant opportunity for eligible applicants, granting access to the highest-tier consumer subscription, which features increased usage limits ideal for complex coding and AI workflows. The program will accept up to 10,000 recipients, with applications reviewed on a rolling basis until the application window closes on June 30, 2026.

Eligibility is divided into two tracks.

  • The Maintainer Track targets primary maintainers or core team members of public GitHub repositories with a minimum of 5,000 stars or 1 million monthly NPM downloads. Additionally, applicants must hold merge access and demonstrate active participation in the repository over the past three months.
  • The Ecosystem Impact Track accommodates projects that may not meet the aforementioned benchmarks but are significant to the software ecosystem. Applicants in this track must submit a written explanation detailing their project’s importance to be considered.

General eligibility requires that applicants be at least 18 years old, legal residents of a country with Claude.ai access, and maintain a GitHub account in good standing. Individuals must not be affiliated with Anthropic or its affiliates. Each person can only apply for one subscription, and multiple submissions will be disregarded.

Those already subscribed to paid Anthropic services will see their existing subscriptions paused during the benefit period but can resume afterward unless canceled. The program’s terms clarify that the subscription is non-transferable and intended for individual use only. Sharing access credentials can lead to termination of the subscription.

By accepting the subscription, recipients consent to allow Anthropic to publicly identify them, including their name and GitHub username. Approval for the program is at Anthropic’s discretion, and meeting eligibility does not guarantee acceptance.
